RAISE YOUR LEVEL OF AWARENESS OF HOW PORNOGRAPHY SURROUNDS YOU
1) We are surrounded with inappropriate sexual images everywhere we look. So much so we, sadly, don’t even seem to be shocked anymore. For the next several days, take extra notice as you are out and about of how many suggestive and even obscene images are visible to you, your family and kids. Take note of television programs and commercials as well. Also notice how many inappropriate book and magazine titles are visible as you visit your library or favorite bookstore. Often these publications are located at children’s eye level. As you are driving, notice how many sex businesses and billboards advertising them are part of your everyday scenery. Raise your level of awareness of how pervasive these images are in your community. Realize how these images are finding you and impacting your thought processes and those of the children in your life.

PROTECT OUR CHILDREN
There are many important ways to insist on the protection of the children in your life and yourself from exposure to cell phone pornography. Here are a few:
- Ask your child if any inappropriate pictures have appeared on their cell phone
- Check the history feature on your child’s cell phone (you may need to call technical support for instructions) and become familiar with which sites your child has viewed.
- Contact your cell phone provider. Inquire if they provide downloadable pornography. Inform them that you do not approve of this type of material being provided. Make contact with the corporate leadership through letter, telephone or email. Clearly state that parental blockers and filters are not the answer. Offering it as a product is inappropriate and will impact your decision to remain a customer.
- Contact the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Acting Chairman Mr. Michael J. Copps at Michael.Copps@fcc.gov or call 1-888-225-5322. The FCC mailing address is: Federal Communications Commission, ATTN: Acting Chairman Michael J. Copps, 445 12th Street SW, Washington, D.C. 20554. Inform Mr. Copps of your concerns that this inappropriate material is being made available through internet access and direct downloads provided by cell phone companies. Encourage him to look into the matter and take action of the most stringent nature to prevent these images from being made available in any manner via cell phone technology.
- If you have identified that pornography is accessible via your cell phone you may file a complaint with the FCC using the information listed above.
DISCUSSION WITH A CONVENIENCE STORE MANAGER
What is pornography? Webster’s defines it as “material (as books or a photograph) that depicts erotic behavior and is intended to cause sexual excitement.” This definition makes no distinctions between so-called “soft-core” pornography such as Playboy, Penthouse, etc., and XXX-rated porn.
Here are 4 reasons why you should remove pornography from your store:
- By selling pornography, you are enabling addictive behavior. Dr. Judith Reisman, Ph.D, is an expert on the communication effects of images on the brain, mind, and memory. In testimony before Congress on November 18, 2004, Dr. Reisman emphasized how pornography not only influences behavior but also actually alters brain chemistry. During the same hearing, Dr. Jeffrey Satinover, M.S., M.D., compared pornography addiction to heroin addiction. He said, “Only the delivery is different, and the sequence of steps. The pornography addict soon forgets about everything and everyone else in favor of an ever more elusive sexual jolt.”
- By selling pornography, you are contributing to the breakup of marriages and families. It is a well-documented fact that pornography abuse is a secret “third partner” in many marriages. Men substitute true intimacy with their wives for the secretive, unrealistic and unhealthy fantasy life that pornography cultivates. Two-thirds of the divorce lawyers attending a 2002 meeting of the American Academy Of Matrimonial Lawyers said the Internet played a significant role in the previous year’s divorces.
